Students and Parents,
We are so excited to bring Shrek Jr. to Wyoming Middle School! The audition process will run a little differently this year, so please read this message carefully and in it’s entirety. We apologize that it is lengthy, but there is a lot of information to share.
Auditions are being held on Wednesday, August 30th beginning at 3:30 p.m. Please use the Sign Up Genius to register for an audition slot. We kindly request that if at all possible, leave the earlier audition times for 7th & 8th graders due to Open House @ the Middle School for those grades the night of auditions. It was an unavoidable schedule conflict and we apologize for any inconvenience. Thank you for your understanding.
Auditions are being conducted by:
Director: Deondra Means, Cincinnati Children’s Theatre
Choreographer: Madeleine Burgoon, Cincinnati Children’s Theatre
Consultant: Spring Pillow
Musical Director: Spenser Smith
There will be 3 parts to the audition:
- Song: A one minute (maximum) song performed a cappella
- Performance of a side: (The term “side” simply refers to the specific set of lines from the script to perform in the audition). You should practice these lines and be very familiar with them. There are 3 possible pages you can read from, depending on the character for which you are auditioning. These pages are available in the office or in this (you may be asked to do a cold read as well). *If you are trying out for SHREK, there are 2 pages of dialog. Just choose one. *If you are trying out for a character that does not appear on the SIDES available, that is o.k. We can’t provide lines for every role because there are a lot of them! Just pick another character to read at the audition and indicate the character you are auditioning for on your audition form.
- Dance: This will be taught at the audition. The directors will be looking for demonstration of your ability to learn choreography.
The audition process will take longer due to these additional elements. Please expect it to take at least 45 min. When you arrive at your assigned audition time, you will first go with a group to learn the choreography and then go before the directors. When your audition is over, students are expected to leave.

The rehearsal schedule is on the audition form. Please be sure to indicate on the audition form ALL conflicts.
Parent Meeting:
We will be collecting money for fees and DVDs (if interested) at the meeting. We will also be looking for volunteers to fill key roles either as a chair or as a team member:
Set Design and Construction /Painting: Involves working with the Director to come up with the vision for the set design and to figure out how to make it happen within the constraints of the WMS’s space and funding. This includes building and painting the necessary set pieces.
Costumes: Involves working with the Director to determine the vision for the costumes. This includes reviewing the costumes currently existing in the Middle School’s collection and deciding what additional costumes would be needed. Determining which basic pieces should be required of students.
Hair and Makeup: Like last year, students will be asked to bring their own mini makeup kits, which can be ordered online or purchased at Cappel’s. Last year’s kits will be fine. Since this is Shrek Jr., and there may be more makeup than in prior shows, you would work with the Director to determine the look for the hair and makeup and to figure out what would be needed beyond the mini makeup kits.
Props: Involves pulling together or purchasing all of the items needed for the show that are moved on and off the stage, but are not scenery. A list of the items needed is included with the script so you will be able to see what is needed and how it will be used in the show. This will also involve working with the student Prop Manager and Crew to determine how props will be handled by the cast and crew during the show.
Programs/Tickets/T-Shirts: This involves designing the program, t-shirts, and tickets to include the listing of cast and crew.
Water Sales: Purchasing waters and setting up table for volunteers to sell water bottles before the show and during intermission.
Tech Week Snacks: Purchasing and distributing snacks to cast and crew at dinner breaks during tech week the week before the show.
Cast Party: Hosting the party for the cast and crew on the Saturday night after the final show.
If doing one of these doesn’t interest you or work for you, no worries, there will be a Sign Up Genius later in the process asking for volunteers for specific days/times during tech week and performances. This production will take a lot of volunteers!
